Exploring Westonbirt Arboretum with Finch: A Perfect Dog-Friendly Day Out

Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, Westonbirt Arboretum is a haven of natural beauty and the perfect spot for an outdoor adventure with your furry companion. As Finch and I arrived at the arboretum, we were immediately captivated by the kaleidoscope of colors and the peaceful ambiance that made it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle. Whether you’re looking for a serene stroll or a more active outing, Westonbirt has something for every dog and their owner.

The Dog-Friendly Experience

Westonbirt is exceptionally dog-friendly. With over 600 acres of stunning woodland and carefully marked dog-friendly zones, it’s easy to plan a memorable day out with your pup. Finch, being a lively cockapoo, had a blast trotting along the paths, weaving through the towering trees, and sniffing everything in sight.

Dogs are allowed off-lead in the Silk Wood area, which is full of winding paths and hidden nooks for your pup to explore. We followed the seasonal walking route and found it to be a great balance of exercise and tranquility. The marked paths are easy to follow, and with so much space, Finch could roam and investigate without disturbing other visitors.

Highlights of the Arboretum

The arboretum is home to over 2,500 species of trees, each with its unique character and charm. One of our favorite moments was walking under the Japanese maples, where the vibrant red and orange leaves created a striking backdrop. The contrast between the colors of autumn and the evergreen trees made it feel like we had stepped into a living painting.

Another highlight is the Treetop Walkway, a 300-meter-long elevated path that gives you a bird’s eye view of the forest. While dogs aren’t allowed on the walkway itself, Finch didn’t seem to mind sticking to the ground while I took in the view from above. It’s a great spot for human companions to pause and reflect on the beauty of nature.

Tips for Visiting with Your Dog

  • Bring plenty of water: Although Westonbirt provides dog water stations, it’s always a good idea to have your own supply, especially on warm days or during longer walks.
  • Be mindful of leads: While dogs are welcome off-lead in Silk Wood, the Old Arboretum (another part of the site) is a lead-only area. Be respectful of the rules to ensure the arboretum remains a welcoming space for all.
  • Dog-friendly café: After our walk, we stopped at the dog-friendly café near the entrance. It was the perfect spot for me to grab a coffee and for Finch to relax after a long walk.

Why Westonbirt is a Must-Visit for Dog Owners

From breathtaking trees to wide-open spaces, it’s the perfect setting for making memories with your furry friend. The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum were kind enough to treat Finch and I to this wonderful day. They offer an annual membership to the arboretum which is £42 per year for one person, or £82 per year for two adults and two children, which grants access to this wonderful location all year round.
